The Pool at "P. K. Yavorov" School

Straldja, Bulgaria

Background:

The pool complex -- comprised of a 25-meter pool and a smaller, training pool -- was once the center of a large swimming program at the "P.K. Yavorov" school in Straldja.  More than 200 students each year took part and regional swimming meets were held here. Swimming teams won numerous awards over the years.

But with the transition from controlled economy to a free market economy came a period of economic depression, and funds were lacking for even major social services.  As a result, there was no money for needed maintenance and the pools gradually became unusable.  The swimming program ended and the swimming instruction staff let go.

The folks in Straldja are hoping some day to have their pool complex back.
